I’m intimately familiar with this book and can tell you that it will indeed trump Azerrad’s Mats chapter, good as TBCBYL is. Pity Paul and Tommy didn’t want to partake, but Jim did a wonderful job pulling gems from interviews over the years to supplement the brilliant yarns and insights he gathered from some truly notable folks as well people in the “just a fan” category. In the end, the main knocks on this book will be the principles’lack of participation and the fact that old-school fans from back in the day will recognize even the most obtuse secondary sources (all of which are meticulously footnoted), but at $15 on Amazon it should hardly be a disappointment to even casual fans. And until PW writes his own book, it’s highly doubtful anyone will trump Jim’s opus.

I am going into ‘All Over But the Shouting’ already biased. Jim Walsh has been quite influential on my own writing and music listening habits. The book will have to be really, very, awesomely, truly bad for me not to think it’s the best thing ever.

And I love Our Band Could Be Your Life. In fact, I think I might have to get that back from my sister so I can read that chapter again, just so I can make a more informed decision on declaring Jim Walsh the best.

I am looking forward to the book, but am doubtful that it will best the Replacements chapter in Our Band Could Be Your Life (my favorite nonfiction music book).
