The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is nothing but a ridiculous corporate marketing tool. Why were The Mats finally nominated this year after seven years of eligibility? Because they’re “hot” right now following their reunion shows, so the record industry sees potential dollar signs in electing them. It’s everything The Replacements and indie rock music are about subverting. The Mats getting in would sort of be like finding out you and Kim Kardashian have the same favorite book. Kind of ruins that book, doesn’t it?
