“Westerberg — who has been out of the public eye for about five years now and famously didn’t appear in the Replacements’ video for “Bastards of Young” — makes a surprising yet typically coy cameo appearance in the video for the title track of Campbell’s acclaimed new album, “Ghost on the Canvas.” The video actually starts off as a direct homage to and/or imitation of the classic “Bastards” clip, with Westerberg playing the part of the dude loafing on the couch staring at the stereo speaker. Paul reappears throughout, too (though not as part of the weirdly hip, young band behind Campbell). The Minneapolis music legend’s involvement makes sense (sort of) if you know that he wrote the “Ghost” song for Campbell. And if you’re a fan, you should know it right away upon hearing the song — classic Westerberg”.

At least, according to this Rolling Stone article.

While a reunion may be unlikely in the near future, Westerberg has spent a lot of time recently combing through his past for a planned box set. “On a whim I got to dig through some old tapes,” he says. “I found one song I never put on anything for people to hear. Then I dug deeper and found the original ‘Good Day’ [from his 1996 solo LP Eventually]. That pretty much stunned me. I have to close this box set pretty soon because this could take the rest of my life just going through all these things and going, ‘God, why was that there.'”

What’s the weirdest thing you two(TS an PW) ever did together?

“One night we were in L.A., staying at the Hyatt on Sunset Boulevard. As a dare, we told this cab driver we’d give him a hundred bucks to drive us backwards all the way to Small’s, which was a bar on Gower and Melrose. He actually did it! He went down Sunset, crossed down Fountain, the entire way in reverse.
I don’t know how we didn’t get pulled over by the cops, but it was funny
as shit”.

Guess who’s #25…

“Formed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1979, The Replacements, led by singer-songwriter-guitarist Paul Westerberg, shot to underground-alternative superstardom thanks to a slew of critically acclaimed (if not commercially successful) albums and a notoriously unpredictable and rowdy live show, where the band’s very presence and inebriation level were anyone’s best-guess from night to night. Said Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong after seeing The Replacements for the first time: “It changed my whole life. If it wasn’t for that, I might’ve spent my whole time playing in bad speed-metal bands.” – Sean Patrick Dooley”

In an interview before his show next Friday at First Avenue — his first local gig with his own band in about five years — Tommy Stinson let it slide that Paul Westerberg had a hand in the making of his new solo album. Unfortunately, it sounds like that hand mostly got severed…….

Darren Hill will be opening his shop “Pop” on April 1st.

About Pop

“I’ve been a collector of pop culture for all of my life. My travels in the music business for the last 30 plus years have allowed me the opportunity to scour antique stores, flea markets, and junk shops all over the world looking for interesting items. POP is the natural evolution of my obsession. A true labor of love.

In a quaint space built as a grocery market in 1923, you’ll find popular culture artifacts of all kinds. Modern, Folk, & Found art. Mid Century Modern furnishings. Oddities, Curiosities, Ephemera, Relics, and just plain Neat Stuff. From the Historical to the Absurd. I like to call them Conversation Pieces. Unique items with personality and a story.

We’re located just off of Main St. in the heart of the historic Hill & Harbor District of East Greenwich, RI – along with other interesting shops and fantastic restaurants.

Come visit us for a unique experience. Bring your curiosity and leave with a smile!
