I had no idea what Paul was going to do when he suddenly lowered the microphone and got down on his knees (thus totally reinforcing the renegade elf classification from earlier) and it was one of those moments where you’re going, “Well, it SOUNDS like ‘All Shook Down’ but I’m pretty sure I am wrong and I am not remembering correctly.” But yes, it was “All Shook Down,” without intro or preface and I wish they would do more of that. There is no end of material in the catalog that would work and that Paul would still feel comfortable singing.

Mr. Westerberg, 54, still has the slender build, flashy wardrobe and insouciant intensity of a rocker. Mr. Stinson, who has also been touring in Guns N’ Roses, was his comic relief, regaling the audience with a tale of falling on his face the morning of the concert. The band kicked up a solid ruckus, just reckless enough as it worked from punk rock back through echoes of the Rolling Stones and the Beatles, while Mr. Westerberg delivered more than two dozen Replacements songs with the same ragged conviction they held in the 1980s.

I did not burst into tears when the band walked onstage because I was fighting for my spot, and still didn’t lose it until later. “Can’t Hardly Wait” and “Bastards” were sheer crystallized joy, bright lights and grinning ear to ear; I have never sang along to these songs so loudly or with more enjoyment. I didn’t lose it until the encore, when Paul came out for “Skyway.” When we parked the car Friday night and got into the elevator, I held it up so I could take a photo of the button marked SKYWAY, these exotic things that do not exist in my world and I only know about because of the Replacements. (The first time I came to town and saw one and then the penny dropped: “SKYWAY!” I was so excited.)

In an uncharacteristically serious moment, Westerberg grew somber and said, “Our old buddy Slim [Dunlap]” is back in the hospital. So, that’s bad. I wish he was here.” He followed up the short tribute with a jumpy frolic through the Jackson 5 song “I Want You Back.” Before the audience could collect themselves, he brought out “an actual musician,” legendary blues player Tony Glover of Koerner, Ray & Glover fame to play harmonica on “Going to New York.”

Somewhat surprisingly, the band didn’t have any guests beyond Tony Glover, who briefly sat in on harmonica. And they chose pretty standard covers, including Chuck Berry’s “Maybellene” and the Jackson Five’s “I Want You Back.” Elsewhere, the band offered up a true rarity in “If Only You Were Lonely,” an early b-side that had the diehards swooning. The faithful also appreciated the few extras thrown into the mix, including Westerberg’s concert-closing version of “Unsatisfied.”

“We’re the Cements, the world’s greatest Replacements tribute band,” he announced at the start of the 75-minute set, where they played to about half of the festival’s 25,000 attendees sandwiched between Jenny Lewis and Beck on the big stage I’m guessing there wasn’t a lot of inner-band camaraderie for them backstage.

Prior to “Androgynous,” Westerberg asked Billie Joe “Would you like to play on this one? Or do you have to make a phone call?” after which they both sat down on Josh Freese’s drum riser to play the song. Later on, the ‘Mats frontman thanked Billie Joe for “adding some life to this thing” and agreeing to do it before “Left of the Dial.” Considering Armstrong’s wife Adrienne is from the Twin Cities (they met at First Avenue on Green Day’s very first tour), it’s not a stretch to picture Armstrong sticking with the band for their first hometown headlining show in 23 years at Midway Stadium in September.

It seems to me that this reviewer seems to know quite a bit about Westerberg’s inner-thoughts. Seemingly.

Except, of course, for the parts when Westerberg simply abandoned the song lyrics all together, as he did during much of “Androgynous.” When his lyrics first dropped out he seemed upset that the crowd wasn’t doing a better job of picking up the ball and running with it, and then he just seemed to want to punish us. Not unlike Andre 3000 on the main stage later that night, his body language often seemed a mixture of “too cool for school” and “fuck y’all.” After asking the crowd if they wanted to hear “Achin’ to Be,” he clearly found the response too tepid, and visibly recoiled.
