It’s not as major-league as Paul McCartney at Target Field, but Twin Cities rock fans will still consider the Replacements’ long-awaited hometown reunion concert at Midway Stadium on Sept. 13 a grand slam. Tickets for the show – billed as their “homecoming concert” – will go on sale next Saturday, May 3, at 10 a.m. for $50 through eTix.com, the stadium’s box office and First Avenue outlets.

It seems The ‘Mats are in this festival loop with Lorde & Neutral Milk Hotel (interesting line-up, right?). If you’re in Texas you can see ’em at Austin City Limits Fest October 3-5 & Oct 10 – 12 and at the Boston Calling Festival September 5-7.

Still no news on a hometown date, but plenty of rumors about it.

As for that long-awaited Replacements hometown gig – which many fans were bogusly thinking would be RTG (nope, having a sister on staff at the Current doesn’t get you that big a discount on a performance fee!) – look for an announcement soon on a mid-September gig at an outdoor venue that should give new meaning to “Swingin’ Party.”

First Ave’s Replacements tribute turning into a Slim Dunlap rally

The STrib is reporting that next week’s ‘Mats Tribute at First Ave is turning into, well, if you read the headline you know, Slim Dunlap rally.

“Already one of the most spirited annual traditions at First Avenue, next weekend’s tribute to the Replacements should have an even greater sense of purpose as organizers have officially turned into a fundraiser and rally for the band’s former guitarist, Slim Dunlap.

Starting this morning, the club is putting three of its balcony tables up for auction for the Nov. 23 concert, the money for which will go straight into Slim’s health fund. Proceeds from general ticket sales — which normally go toward the Twin Cities Community Fund anyway — will also be funneled toward his cause. Meanwhile, the 7th Street Entry side of the show will feature a revival of the Mad Ripple Hootenanny tribute to Slim, which Jim Walsh first hosted back in March with an army of local singer/songwriters at the Amsterdam Bar.”

Every year on the Friday after Thanksgiving, First Ave hosts a ‘Mats tribute show as a benefit for the Twin Cities Music Community Trust. Rumor has it, that it’s a crazy fun evening. I never seem to make the event due to a mix of holiday obligations, angry hermitness, and bookclub hosting preparations.

If you have no such excuses and would like to see The Melismatics, Pink Mink, Lucy Michelle & The Velvet Lapelles, The Belfast Cowboys & a whole bunch of others pay tribute to “Pleased to Meet Me” leave a comment below. You know that for the past three years First Ave has hosted a ‘Mats tribute concert that benefits Twin Cities Music Community Trust, right? And for the past three years we’ve been able to giveaway tickets to lucky PaulWesterberg.net readers. This year is no different. What is different? This year they’ll be paying tribute to ol’ Sorry Ma Forgot to Take Out the Trash, which. . . hang on to your hearing aids and canes. . . turned 30 in August.

My paulwesterberg.net inbox is usually filled to the brim with email. Most of them are requests for Paul (who I am not) to play somewhere or like this (and I quote), “I’m a great admirer of you and your music! I would therefore be very happy if you could send me 2 handsigned (autographed) photos of you.”

You have no idea how much self-restraint it takes to not sign a few photos of myself. Specifically this one from my junior year in high school (rock on 1987).

So you must forgive me that it’s taken so long to pass on this notice from Gimme Noise about Tommy’s upcoming show at First Ave, where they try to stir up some rumors about how might join Tommy on stage.

So yeah, First Avenue and a bunch of illustrious musical types are celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Tim (the second best ‘Mats album ever) on Friday, November 26th — the day after Thanksgiving y’all.

Here’s a little preview of what you can expect to see if you go:
