I had a rock gig flyer collection that covered the walls of my bedroom. Many of the advertised shows had taken place at the Uptown, but I was unable to get past the doorman. Each week I would look at the Uptown’s show calendar in City Pages. The shows would taunt me: local favorites like Arcwelder and Babes in Toyland played there but also hip touring bands like Nirvana and The Flaming Lips. Minneapolis at the time had a thriving music scene but it was all a little older than me and a bit out of reach. I was pretty sure I was really missing out on all the amazing stuff that happened at the Uptown.

“I was in rehab, and they let us out on weekends to go to these sober dances,” [Kevin Bowe] the 53-year-old guitarist and producer said. “And some idiot booked the Replacements to play a sober dance. Of course, they got kicked off after the first set for drinking. I thought, ‘These guys are horrible. Why do I like them so much?'”
