For the uninitiated, that may say everything you need to know about the Replacements and the town from which they hail. I actually heard no nay-saying firsthand Tuesday, but my friend’s comment illustrates something important: that, along with having inspired a few generations of uncommonly passionate fans, the Replacements come from the land of sky blue waters — from the warm and loving embrace of uneasily impressed passive-aggressive smart-asses who don’t want their hometown heroes getting too big for their britches.

There ain’t much going on in blogland. Jim Walsh wrote about Chris Mar’s Tolerance for the MinnPost and Aquarium Drunkard has a phenomenal write up of the Sire-years reissues. And about 1000 vacuous bloggers put their iPods on shuffle and randomly listed 10 songs without any context whatsoever.

Go read a book. I’ve just started Juliana Hatfield’s memoir When I Grow Up (thanks to her publisher for sending it to me). It will probably make it into the Westerberg Bookclub. I’m only 15 pages in and she’s already mentioned the ‘Mats.

What are you reading?

Over at Minn Post Jim Walsh offers up a glimpse at the liner notes in the ‘Mats reissues coming out next week.

Earlier this week, local TV Station WCCO did a pretty nice, lengthy piece on Laurie Lindeen calling her the “coolest lunch lady.” Includes a very awkward Westerberg family picture, and snippet from the Fakebook event last summer.

VH-1 is offering up a stream of Let it Be (Deluxe Edition).

The Village Voice weighs in on the ‘Mats reissues.

Paul Westerberg — An American Hero.

Carrie Brownstein lists her 11 favorite ‘Mats lyrics over on NPR.

In non-‘Mats news, I am babysitting my nephews Nolan, 4, and Liam, 3. They are cleaning the bathtub because they want to. Is that bad?

Hitsville is listing songs about rock and gets to Left of the Dial.

P.S. There’s still time to vote in the first round of ‘Mats Madness.

I can’t stop singing “I’m in Trouble” over and over and over in my head. I hope that telling you about it will help. Somehow, I doubt it.

He’s in the lead as of right this minute, but you can insure that doesn’t change! Vote for Jim Walsh in the MN Book Awards.

I have no idea why this City Pages article from 2003 popped up in a Google Alert, but it did. So now you can read it in case you missed it the first time around.

Who can resist a guy who namedrops Westerberg in his personal ad? Nobody, that’s who.

I am inexplicably drawn to blogs that feature good writing and are sorrta-kinda named after ‘mats lyrics (at least in my head). Go read I Feel Like a Hundred Bucks. Now. You know you have nothing else to do.

Fear and Foklore ponders getting All Over But the Shouting and then waffles.

In honor of the Bob Mould concert I will be attending tonight, here’s a great and thoughtful look at Bob’s career over at The Cedar Lounge Revolution.

Because the ‘Mats/Japan connection never ceases to amuse me, here’s a review of All Over But the Shouting from the Daily Yomiuri.

This one gets linked for giving the world this sentence: If Squirrel Bait were so hot way back when because they supposedly sounded like Hüsker Dü with Paul Westerberg singing, then “Noodles” sounds like Hüsker Dü trying to play “Stink” but still managing to sound like crappy old Hüsker Dü instead. . .

A short missive on The Ledge.

So yeah, here’s some weirdness. I live in a little town called Shakopee which is about 25 minutes south of Minneapolis. I don’t call it a suburb. Anyway, so here is a blog on the Shakopee Valley News’ Web site talking about songwriters and lyrics. And it mentions Paul Westerberg, Tom Waits, and Soul Coughing. Sometimes I love this town.

I don’t know why but I kind of liked this rambly post about songwriting over at adamhillrocks.
