The reunited Replacements are playing their first full shows this week, so it seems time to dig out this archive feature from Uncut’s July 2008 issue (Take 134), in which the group’s songwriter and frontman talks us through his mighty back catalogue. Includes REM, flight attendants and anti-depressants… But which album is Westerberg’s mother’s favourite? Interview: Andrew Mueller

Phony blues wailing or an ill-suited style attempt will send my own dog running. Yet when it’s so right it’s scary my four-legged audience is guaranteed though I must say he’s yet to come up with a decent bridge. No, the goose bumps do not lie.

For the first time since 2006, the Replacements have recorded new songs. In late September, singer Paul Westerberg and bassist Tommy Stinson spent a day in a Minneapolis studio and cut four cover songs that will be released later this year as a limited edition 10-inch vinyl EP. All 250 copies will auctioned online, and the proceeds will benefit Slim Dunlap, the Replacements’ guitarist from 1987 to 1991, who had a severe stroke in February.

In case you missed this yesterday (like I did), The Village Voice has a nice little Q&A with Paul about that new Glen Campbell record. It includes this little tidbit. I, for one, would still buy a Paul Westerberg record.

As far as the grown-ups go, are you thinking of putting out a proper solo album again, or have you had it with the industry?

I’m always writing and I have plenty of songs, but I think the Glen Campbell record is a bit of a test to see if people still buy records. Or go for my stuff. I’d like to go on record and say something concrete, but I can’t. So, we shall see.
