For years, Westerberg seemed set against a reunion, as a point of pride. But in 2012, Slim Dunlap, who played guitar in the Replacements from 1987 to 1991, suffered a severe stroke. Dunlap had been essential in stabilizing the band after the split with Bob Stinson, and is a beloved figure in the Minnesota music scene. Westerberg and Tommy Stinson came together in Minneapolis to record Songs for Slim, a five-song covers EP that included two of Dunlap’s songs, with sales going toward raising money for their former bandmate’s medical care. “He’s been in and out of the hospital maybe 40 times,” says Westerberg. After that, the reemergence of the Replacements didn’t seem so crazy. “We were talking to Slim when he was in the hospital,” says Westerberg. “And I was like, ‘Should we play?’ And he said, ‘Yeah, play.'”

In case you, like me, were out tonight, Rolling Stone has posted their Q&A with Westerberg. The most interesting bit (non question or answer category) was this:
“Former Replacements manager Peter Jesperson and Stinson’s manager Ben Perlstein, along with singer Dan Baird, are leading an effort to raise money for Dunlap’s medical care. Eighteen artists have signed on to record his songs, including Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Jakob Dylan and Replacements drummer Chris Mars, who skipped the ‘Mats reunion. All recordings will be issued on limited-release vinyl (250 ten-inch EPs for the Replacements) and auctioned online to the highest bidders, with digital downloads also available. Details about release dates and the auction location are still being determined, but Jesperson hopes to begin with the ‘Mats record in December, followed by another single every month or so.”

Please oh Please oh Please let someone cover Slim’s “Chrome Lipstick.” It’s one of my favorites (because as an egomaniac I’m partial to songs with the word chrome in them, said the woman whose last name is Chromey).

What’d you think of the Q&A. Will we see a tour? How do you feel about Paul & Tommy using the “R” word? Inquiring Westernerds want to know.

Saw this piece in the latestRolling Stone about Ryan Adams’ influences. After searching in vain for the Mats/PW, saw that Zen Arcade was on his list, with this little blurb:

“He got a big hug from Hüsker Dü frontman Bob Mould when they met this year, but another of his heroes from Minneapolis wasn’t that into him. “Paul Westerberg said in an interview that someone should knock my teeth out,” Adams says. “I left home because of things like that. I can’t listen to his music again, ever.”

Opinions? I know this was covered here like, 5 years ago.

Also RS has a review of the reissue of Tim.
