Over at the STrib, Chris Riemenschneider wrote a lovely obituary of Slim Dunlap, who died December 18, 2024.

Slim died 12 years after being left bed-ridden by a stroke. I’m almost two years into surviving my own stroke, so I got some feels I’m not dealing with until after the holidays. Yay, compartmentalization.

In the meantime, if you’re not familiar with Slim’s solo work. Give this one a whirl.

Yeah I dont know what his health condition is at the moment but I know some folks were cutting some things of his. I hope I get a chance to cut one of his songs because hes, its just, this stuff, check out the two Slim Dunlap records because theyre just so beautiful, theyre just beautiful rock n roll records. I found them to be deeply touching and emotional. Kristina Train: very Dusty Springfield. Theres a song called “Dark Black” thats fantastic. I love that. And let me see who else I can plug here while Im rolling.

Slim Town Singles is honored to present music inspired by Slim and performed by the many friends, family and fans he has throughout the Minnesota music community and beyond. All songs made available via Slim Town are productions donated by the artists themselves, with downloads offered for sale at a “pay what you like” price. All proceeds from download sales go directly to support Slim’s care and recovery.

The entire Songs for Slim project was spearheaded by former Replacements manager Peter Jesperson, who now works at New West Records, with additional support from Twin Cities writer PD Larson and Tommy Stinson’s manager Ben Perlstein. Jesperson says he got the idea to do a benefit album within days of hearing about Dunlap’s stroke.

His penchant for country-inflected passages and a focus on rock steady rhythms that’d make Keith Richards sit up and take notice have made him a hero in his adopted hometown, Minneapolis, Minnesota, but also to rock enthusiasts around the world. His style was markedly different than that of his predecessor, Bob Stinson, in the Replacements, something he would have been well aware of but still probably had to hear about and discuss in many a Q&A session.”

According to the Songs for Slim site auction starts at 8 a.m. (PST) on January 15 (that’ll be 10 a.m. for us in the Midwest) and each auction lasts a week. Here’s what you’ll be bidding on, from the site:

This is the first new Replacements release since 1990’s All Shook Down. Only 250 numbered 10” vinyl EPs are being made.
