Contrary to popular opinion, you didn’t have to be there.

When dealing with The Replacements — a band that means so much to so many — it’s easy to forget that not everyone knows it all when it comes to Minneapolis’ best rock ‘n’ roll band. So we’re creating a safe space for those who weren’t at Jay’s Longhorn Bar, or those who didn’t pore over every liner note and wear their record players’ needles to nubs in the end groove of “Here Comes a Regular” at Tim’s weepy conclusion.

“Honestly, I got a little teary when we finally got it done,” Petryshyn said, noting that he and other staffers were up until 4 a.m. today dealing with media inquiries and other to-do’s after last night’s announcement splashed over the web. He wasn’t surprised by the crazed response, though, given the pent-up hope for a ‘Mats reunion someday. “It’s just been way too long for them not to finally do this,” he said.

While a reunion may be unlikely in the near future, Westerberg has spent a lot of time recently combing through his past for a planned box set. “On a whim I got to dig through some old tapes,” he says. “I found one song I never put on anything for people to hear. Then I dug deeper and found the original ‘Good Day’ [from his 1996 solo LP Eventually]. That pretty much stunned me. I have to close this box set pretty soon because this could take the rest of my life just going through all these things and going, ‘God, why was that there.'”

Spins 125 Best Albums of the Past 25 Years

While most of this Spin list made me make that skeptical, smug, judgmental smelled something bad face. U2? Really? God, I hate U2. And I’m a little shocked that The Strokes placed so high (above Liz Phair’s Exile in Guyville, seriously do the people at Spin have hearing problems). But, I was pretty stoked to see numbers 15 and 11.
