Tommy & Paul reunite for covers EP to benefit Slim Dunlap

For the first time since 2006, the Replacements have recorded new songs. In late September, singer Paul Westerberg and bassist Tommy Stinson spent a day in a Minneapolis studio and cut four cover songs that will be released later this year as a limited edition 10-inch vinyl EP. All 250 copies will auctioned online, and the proceeds will benefit Slim Dunlap, the Replacements’ guitarist from 1987 to 1991, who had a severe stroke in February.

What’s the weirdest thing you two(TS an PW) ever did together?

“One night we were in L.A., staying at the Hyatt on Sunset Boulevard. As a dare, we told this cab driver we’d give him a hundred bucks to drive us backwards all the way to Small’s, which was a bar on Gower and Melrose. He actually did it! He went down Sunset, crossed down Fountain, the entire way in reverse.  I don’t know how we didn’t get pulled over by the cops, but it was funny  as shit”.

My paulwesterberg.net inbox is usually filled to the brim with email. Most of them are requests for Paul (who I am not) to play somewhere or like this (and I quote), “I’m a great admirer of you and your music! I would therefore be very happy if you could send me 2 handsigned (autographed) photos of you.”

You have no idea how much self-restraint it takes to not sign a few photos of myself. Specifically this one from my junior year in high school (rock on 1987).

So you must forgive me that it’s taken so long to pass on this notice from Gimme Noise about Tommy’s upcoming show at First Ave, where they try to stir up some rumors about how might join Tommy on stage.
