Since posting that “Answering Machine” cover on Tuesday, I’ve been thinking of ‘Mats songs that I wish women would cover. Okay, that’s kind of a lie. I’ve been thinking about it since I typed that title up there. So here is my holy three wishlist:
- Liz Phair, If Only You Were Lonely
- Lucinda Williams, Here Comes a Regular
- The Donnas, Bastards of Young
I could probably go on and on, and I’m already thinking about a solo Triumvirate cover edition which would totally include Regina Spektor. Which women do you think should cover the ‘Mats?
Sinead O’Connor – Within Your Reach
Sleater Kinney – Left of the Dial
Melissa Etheridge – Unsatisfied
I really wanted to get Aretha Franklin on the list but I’m having a hard time picking the right tune.
The pairing of Sinead O’Connor with Within Your Reach is sheer, fucking brilliance. Wow, I really want to hear that.
Karen O – Rattlesnake
Jessica Lea Mayfield – I Wil Dare
Yo La Tengo (Georgia Hubley) – Color Mr Impressed
jenny lewis – androgynous
emmylou harris – achin to be
brody armstrong of the distillers – kids dont follow
The first two I am on board with, but for the love of all that is good and decent keep the Donnas away from Bastards of Young.
(A few years ago there was a band whose name escapes me–or I’ve repressed–who was opening for Old 97’s and they closed their set with a watered-down version of Bastards. I spent the entire song flipping them off. It was juvenile but I can look you in the eye and tell you it was not unsatisfying.)
Kim & Kelley Deal – Swinging Party
Chan Marshall – Nightclub Jitters
Thalia Zedek – Unsatisfied
I think it would be cool if Ani DiFranco covered a ‘Mats song. I’ve got nothing particular in mind, I’d just like to hear what she could do with with it.
Yma Sumac – Bastards of Young
Kate Bush covering “The Ledge”
“A boy I knew once years ago is tryin’ to be reached on the phone”
“I’m the girl they couldn’t ignore for the first time in my life I’m sure”
