Yeah, I like when bands try something different with a cover tune to make it their own, but sometimes you can overthink it. I was bummed Superchunk passed on it.
They had me in the beginning but the lost me at the break down. It reminded me of a bad lounge act at times or that Will Ferrell bit on SNL where they were they singing duo. Too bad – it had potential too.
For me it was cool to see Todd Barry, one of my favorite comics, play drums on one of my favorite songs. But I agree – the slow chorus just sounds shitty and forced.
different…I like the fast part but not the slow part…it just drags and drags…

Very disappointing.
props for the deconstruction, but trying to fill Tommy’s bass line with that trumpet kills it…
I liked it at first but the chorus is a disaster. Nice try. Next!
I threw up a little.

It’s hard to cover the world’s best/ worst cover band.
just terrible. Awful band who display just how crappy they are but deciding to add the slow chorus.
For a better Mats’ “cover,” check out the cover of this month’s Filter magazine:

Like a Partridge Family cover, lacking in any intensity whatsoever…during the verse and then this whacked PROG chorus….horrid IMO.
