    I say, HELL YES!
Even though we all have these tracks Im sure, it’ll be nice to have good clean mixes.
I love me some “Like You.”

  • zook says:

This has most of what I’ve heard exist but do not have – only ones I don’t see are Skip It and D.E.A.D.

    Saving my money for April!

  • Jimdracula says:

Great to see “Bad Worker” & “You’re Getting Married” finally getting their due, but too bad “Hard to Wave in Handcuffs” and “Goddamnit” are MIA.

Always dug the Mats’ sublime covers of “Temptation Eyes”, “20th Century Boy” and “Heartbeat, It’s a Lovebeat”; somewhere Tony DeFranco is smiling. I’d trade one Grass Roots for one Jackson 5 “I’ll Be There” or Edison Lighthouse, but it’s cool.

  • Placemat says:

Great News. & The bonus track details are fantastic. It is interesting to see what’s included & what didn’t make the cut.

I’m also glad to see “…Getting Married” on there but ain’t shocked to see “…Handcuffs” excluded. I think this is one of those raw Westerberg tunes you have to be a die-hard to enjoy. The song does contain a line or two that I absolutely love…

“Guzzled half a Coke, That was sittin’ on a dryer”
“In an old Laundromat, what do you think about…IT”

The fact that Paul says “it” & not “that” kinda illustrates everything I love about the guy’s lyric style.

What about “Nowhere Is My Home”? Is that a Tim outtake?

  • Jimdracula says:

Believe “Nowhere is My Home” is a Tim outtake & what an ace track! I never tire of listening to it (off of Boink!!) & I actually prefer the Tim version of “Can’t Hardly Wait” to PTMM. Both tracks sound married to each other.

I agree with you on those sleight of hand lyrics in “…Handcuffs” & marvel how Westerberg can turn anger into vulnerability in a flash & then make it funny. C’mon, has a belch ever been more compelling? lol You got the story on “You’re Pretty When You’re Rude”?

  • Placemat says:

The Boink cover is one of my favorite band pics. Plus you get Paul Simmons on the back.

I also prefer the Tim CHW. I’d even go so far as to say it’s sorta spoiled the PTMM version. Cutting out the lines, “I’ll be sad in Heaven, If I don’t find a hole in the gate” is real a crime. I think the song needs to rock, but the Chilton air-shaft version is also a personal favorite.

I’m not down with “You’re Pretty When You’re Rude”. What’s the story there?

Looking over the list it’s all gonna be great, but I’m real curious about the following…

“You Ain’t Gotta Dance,” studio demo*
“Get on the Stick,” studio demo*
    “Oh Baby,” studio demo*
    “Get Lost,” outtake*
“A Toe Needs a Shoe,” outtake*
    “Basement Jam,” rehearsal*
    “Staples in Her Stomach,” outtake*
“Junior’s Got a Gun,” outtake – rough mix*
    “Ain’t No Crime,” outtake*
“Johnny Fast,” outtake – rough mix*
    “Treatment Bound,” alternate version*
    “Answering Machine,” solo home demo*
    “Heartbeat — It’s a Lovebeat,” outtake – rough mix*

Some of these may have popped up under other titles, & some of ’em like “Staples…” & “Jr. Got a Gun” etc. are on live boots, but I’d say this is the bulk of the fresh meat.

Agreed. That track is too damn dangerous to go on a re-issue I guess. Not only do you get that lyrical brilliance, both the premeditated and the passion of the moment kind, but you also get an undiluted dose of stage danger.

    Pshhht…..

    Big deal……

Let me know when the Zuzu’s Petals cds are remastered and re-released, and then I’ll get excited.

  • Placemat says:

    LOL. Funny guy.

  • jimdracula says:

Hey Placemat, I was hoping you had the story on “You’re Pretty When You’re Rude” – timeline, etc. – cuz I’m not so sure.

I also dig “Kansas City Star” and a lewd ditty they used to perform called “Lift Her Skirt.” The latter off of the Mats unreleased Christmas album.

Hells yeah, “Hard to Wave in Handcuffs” is a dangerous track, which is part of its greatness. There’s a moment where Westerberg loses his shit & you don’t know where he’s going & it’s transcendent. That cat Westerberg swings.

  • mmr421 says:

zuzu’s petals reissues? was that sarcasm or the weed talkin?

  • blasty says:

“You’re Pretty When You’re Rude” is also known as “All That We’ve Been Through”, from the early 80’s basement demos.

  • Jay says:

I hope these reissues arent inlieu of the oft-spoken of “box-set” that was suppossed to happen.
Im guessing were never gonna see a box set lol.

  • Christian says:

I’m very excited, but obvious omissions at first glance are: “Street Girl” and “Who’s Gonna Take Us Alive” from the LIB sessions.

  • jimdracula says:

Fuck yeah, I just won a wager on the “You’re Pretty When You’re Rude” debate with a musician buddy. The beauty of it is I always get paid in vinyl.

  • honkywithahaton says:

Maybe the omission of “Street Girl” etc. from the reissues mean their WILL be a box set and they had to save a few of these rarities for that.

  • Some Guy In The Corner says:

Somewhere on a CD of unreleased Mats stuff I’ve got, there’s a short snippet (like fifteen seconds maybe) of an alternate version of Seen Your Video with complete vocals throughout. Anybody know if that exists in its entirety somewhere?

It’s called “You Look Like An Adult”.
I’ve heard it on live bootlegs, but I don’t know if there’s a studio version.
