Mats Madness!

By 09.Apr.0843 Comments

OK, here we go to settle once and for all (yeah right) which is the best Replacements or Replacements related album.  Here’s the bracket (right click or control click to get a better view) Bracket In order to come out to a nice even number to make the bracket work best, I included everybody’s solo albums plus a few oddities (Nothing For All, The Shit Hits The Fans, etc.) but left out anything that didn’t have a significant amount of original Mats material (Singles Soundtrack, the Rhino best of, etc).  If you feel I’ve left anything out that absolutely should have been included…just don’t tell anyone. I’m sure people will find fault with some of the seedings.  I tried to be objective and base them on what I feel the general consensus is among fans, but I’m sure some of my personal bias came through.  But hey, just like in sports sometimes you get a bad call and you’ve just got to deal with it. I’ve set up an offsite poll for you to make your selections for each matchup in round 1.  Let’s give it a week and say the voting for round 1 will close at end of day Wednesday April 16th at which point the winners will move on, the losers will go to cutout bins and yard sales, and I’ll post an updated bracket.

Here’s the link to the poll

Round 1 voting open now through Wed. 4/16  Good Luck to all your favorites!

Boink v Grandpaboy is tough. TOUGH. By the way this is totally my new favorite thing.

  • Jake says:

That was so hard to do. I loved village gorilla head but mono/stereo was my favorite westerberg album. That was also my new favorite thing …

  • Jake says:

also there is a vinyl copy of all shook down on ebay. I already have it but for those of you who don’t here is the link…..http://cgi.ebay.com/THE-REPLACEMENTS-ALL-SHOOK-DOWN-ORIGINAL-GERMAN-LP_W0QQitemZ260228133519QQihZ016QQcategoryZ306QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

  • Jodi says:

I am surprised that Eventually is doing so poorly.

  • Tim says:

btw, the last vinyl copy of all shook down sold for $76 on ebay. My bid was a bit short.

And this is a pretty fun exercise, and will be until Folker takes a fall to lesser competition!

  • Jake says:

I paid 60 for my copy of asd

  • Jodi says:

I am fascinated by the Boink v. Grandpaboy fight.

  • Placemat says:

    Fun.

LIB vs. Static Taxi? Wow, bloody.

    Hoot vs. 75% = Mac & Cheese.

For me, Boink vs Grandpaboy = Nowhere vs. Lush… & Psycho…

Sorry Ma vs Open Season? Poor cartoon, set upon by a gang of unruly teens.

The hardest has gotta be Stereo vs. Shit. Both cool for completely different reasons. “You guys can move up front, but ya don’t gotta.”

  • Placemat says:

The Finale 4: LIB vs Hoot, Tim vs. PTMM.

    Gonna be messy.

  • Jodi says:

Aren’t you so excited you could pee your pants?

  • Jay says:

    Jodi.
    well…
    I love you.

    this will be fun.
    or at least funny.

  • Jay says:

    how do we bet…
    like cold real money?
    hehehe

  • Jay says:

and if sorry ma loses to open season, well, then…enjoy each others company….
    sigh
    (nervously biting fingernails)

  • Wolfdog says:

The seeding of this bracket is pretty sly. Most of the first round are blowouts… but a couple made me wince that they are eliminated so quickly. (I listen to Slim’s Old New Me more than any Mars or Tommy album((other than Friday Night….)))

Is it just me, or is the southwest region relatively weak? (yes, I call it the southwest rather than ‘lower left-hand side’… sounds much more sporting that way) I think it’s the only one I don’t have a fairly clear guess as to which one will make it out of there.

  • Jodi says:

Jay, I’m with you man. Sorry Ma is roughly 84 times better than the Open Season soundtrack. There is NO WAY it’s going out in the first round.

  • scooterboy says:

    this is cool beans. surprises:

once, twice, three times… & folker are basically running obama/clinton on us.

SIX people voted a mars solo album over hoot & ptmm!

squirrels gets CRUSHED (i voted squirrels)!

sorry ma & open season TIED?

  • zook says:

Some guy – you rock for setting this up!

I voted Squirrels too. Open Season has no business beating Sorry Ma. This is going to be fun.

  • Jodi says:

I think the new race to watch is Eventually v. Nothing for All. I’ve long been an advocate for the utter suckiness of eventually.

  • Tim says:

That Nothing for All is a PTP-er, Open Season a Diaper Dandy!

  • Jake says:

“waiting for the return of the crawling king snake john lee”

  • todd says:

sorry ma is my personal fave. geez, i must be old. i have vinyl copies of all the mats albums thru asd, 7″ vinyl of a bunch of old singles, etc.. My prize is my autographed Let It Be, which includes an incoherent line by Bob.

  • Jake says:

Thats amazing……..I’m too damn young to have met bob or seen the mats. I was 5 in 1991. But i do have all the vinyl copies of the albums though all shook down…..and the shit hits the fans tape and some singles. Also bash and pop 45. But i have to say by far the hardest to find was asd. It was pressed in Germany only i believe…….

  • Jay says:

sorry ma is tied with open season? stop letting ur kids vote people.

  • Jodi says:

Seriously, how can a bunch of retread cartoon songs even come close to competing with Sorry Ma? Is someone fucking with us?

  • Beats Pickin says:

    Shenanigans!

    Vote early and vote often.

  • scooterboy says:

if sorry ma falls, everything about this poll is corrupt. the whole system fails! i’m shiftless when idle, goddammit!

  • blasty says:

Although it would suck to see Sorry Ma eliminated, it would be nice to see that a PW solo album can stand up to the mats cds in the eyes of his fans. It’s gotta be disappointing for him to tour and hear the loud cheers whenever he plays the mats songs, and people taking their seats during his solo songs.

    “500 lonely years ago
    he shone blue and bright
    and it’s killing
    him to know
    they’re just seeing it tonight”

    indeed

  • Placemat says:

    FUCK OFF, You too close.

LOL. Sorry. I just had too.

  • Placemat says:

FUCK OFF, You look too close.

LOL. Sorry. I had to do it.

  • blasty says:

I heard you the first time! ; )

  • Placemat says:

Damn work. Always F-ing up my posts.

  • blasty says:

You need to get a new job.
I wouldn’t trust a company that messes up my posts.

  • Tim says:

Who brought all the Stinson love, stuffing the ballot to beat Folker and S/G?

    Katherine Graham running this show?

  • blasty says:

and Sorry Ma jumped ahead by over 200 votes.

I smell a rat. And not a nice rat like Mickey Mouse, or that rat from Muskrat Love. A dirty, cheating rat. Like George Wrat Bush. Or
Ben, when he got rabies and bit Michael Jackson.

  • Jodi says:

    Something’s fishy. . .

  • Jay says:

    wow…200 votes…sweet…it wasnt me..i swear…not thta i wouldnt, but i didnt

  • Beats Pickin says:

and the “Old Country Buffet” award goes to…?

  • Jimdracula says:

    Westerberg wins by a nose.

  • scooterboy says:

when is round two? i am ready to bring it!

  • Marty says:

Cerebral Rape and Pillage… Call me old fashioned, but a final 4 sans Pleased to Meet Me is simply wrong

  • Marty says:

When it comes to Mr. Westerberg. My friend Brad said it best circa 1991. Paul could release an album of fart sounds and we would both buy it!!!
